The Story Behind Hines+Young's Commitment to Clean Beauty
Jack Pine·June 14, 2023
In a world where beauty products often contribute to the global plastic pollution crisis, Hines+Young is a game-changer.
It is no secret that the beauty industry generates an enormous amount of plastic waste globally, gaining significant attention due to its detrimental effects on the environment, particularly in aquatic ecosystems, the most concerning contributor is microplastics.
Microplastics are extremely small pieces of plastic debris measuring less than 5 millimeters in size occurring from both the breakdown of larger plastic packaging over time and from microplastic beads, often referred to as “cosmetic microplastics” solely manufactured for their use as ingredients in personal care and cosmetic products, such creams, lotions, and scrubs.
Microplastics are often too small to be filtered out by conventional wastewater treatment plants, leading them to flow directly into bodies of water posing a serious threat to creatures and ecosystems. These particles can be ingested by a wide range of aquatic organisms, including fish, mollusks, and plankton, entering the food chain at its lowest levels. Their ability to absorb toxic chemicals also makes them carriers of pollutants. As larger predators consume smaller ones, the concentration of microplastics magnifies, causing bioaccumulation. This not only affects the organisms' health but also poses potential risks to humans through seafood consumption.
Addressing microplastic pollution requires collaborative efforts from governments, industries, and consumers. Stricter regulations and bans on microplastics in personal care products are essential to curbing their release into waterways. Hines+Young has made it our mission to reduce plastic pollution by continuing to invest time and money in research and innovation to identify eco-friendly alternatives without compromising product effectiveness.
Recognizing the detrimental impacts of plastic waste on our environment, we collaborated with Waterkeeper Alliance. This dedicated non-profit organization passionately champions pristine water across the globe.
Consumer awareness is equally crucial. By making informed choices and supporting products that reduce the use of plastic packaging and are free of microplastics, individuals can contribute to reducing the demand for such pollutants.
Inspired by our deep-rooted love for beauty, skincare, and a touch of elegance, we set forth on a heart-driven journey to discover more eco-friendly ways to pamper oneself. Our commitment to sustainability, intertwined with a feminine desire to nurture the world, gave birth to the eco-conscious vision of Hines+Young.
Uniting for a Cause
Hines+Young is not merely a business venture; it’s a heartfelt family journey. My daughter, Cat, shares my passion for sustainability and pure beauty. Together, we have engaged in thought-provoking conversations about the importance of making high-end products accessible to more people and the values that matter to this generation.
Since then, we have expanded our team, involving my sister, Becky and my brother Mike. With a shared vision and collective efforts, we come together to build a company that aligns with our values and contributes to a cleaner, more sustainable future.
During my visit to Ever Green Environmental in South Carolina, I found myself reflecting on Hines+Young's unwavering dedication to sustainability and mindful practices. For us, it was a crucial decision to use aluminum and glass packaging for our products, in lieu of single use plastics.
Peyton Munafo, the proprietor of Ever Green Environmental, seemed to resonate deeply with my values and warmly added, "Huge thanks to Hines+Young for steering clear of plastic. Believe me, we've had more than enough of it. Our planet deserves better." This shared concern for preserving our environment struck a chord, and Peyton continued, "Whether it's battling microplastics or preventing other forms of pollution, the effort to keep our surroundings clean truly uplifts me. I'm an outdoorsman and when I go into a place and I see trash and plastic it just makes my heart drop. I hate it.”
I confessed to Peyton that I’m more of an “indoorsman” and like to relax, but I also hate to see how much plastic waste is out there.
The conversation between us exemplified a mutual dedication to safeguarding the environment. It showcased how conscious choices can profoundly shape a path toward a more sustainable and promising future.
